The project is basically about building an open appliance heat exchanger that would help to improve the efficiency of the device and eventually help to save energy. The energy recovery unit could be used for a variety of portable electrical appliances like dryers, hot water heaters and other heating units.
The project works on the principle of passive heat exchanger. An effort is being made to construct a more efficient and easy to use passive heat exchanger that can help to recover energy. Moreover, it is an open hardware and open source solution for conserving energy from home appliances.
To maximize the efficiency, thin walled bars have been implanted in the heat exchanger and for measuring the temperature of the heat exchanger, a built in electronic controller has been used.
Whenever the heat exchanger senses that there is energy that could be reclaimed, it activates a high speed fan in order to draw the heat out of exchanger fins.
