Commercial systems that serve this purpose are of two types. The first one is a horizontal device in which the top cover turns by a few degrees to make the food available. This cannot support a large quantity of food. Vertical devices, on the other, can hold a lot more food but this model too has certain difficultes associated with it.
The device that is being constructed here is a totally new one and consists of linear actuators that pull pellets of food outside the box.
A microwave oven motor is used to power the dispenser. But it was later found out this was not a good strategy. This is because of the fact that the microwave oven motors do not provide the necessary power that is required to grind the pellets at times when they get blocked in the mechanism. In such situations, the motors can be made to rotate in the anticlockwise direction. A disadvantage here is that a lot of unwanted sound is produced when this approach is implemeted and this may also reduce the life of the motor.
To overcome this issue, the microwave oven motor was replaced by a servo motor thas has the capability to develop a torque of 20kg/cm. An ardunio is used to control the motor. The arduino controls the push and pull of the servo distribution board.
The final design was able to hold 4kgs of pellets and the refill time was about 4 weeks. The device can be improved by simplifying the electronics involved.
