A convincing head hologram is the goal of creating this project in addition Halloween decorations. It will look like the head in the image below which can somehow be scary to visitors.

Ghost Illusion Created with a Hologram

There are some things which will be needed in order to create this illusion. They include a piece of glass which is relative to the size of the area for viewing the illusion. An LCD or CRT monitor as well as a computer. In a much smaller spot, an LCD monitor can be used but to give a better reflection, CRT monitors are preferred. The LCD monitor is much easier to hide in the cabinet since it came with a removable stand. The floating head movie shown below is the last material needed.

The monitor must remain out of view of the spectator since the illusion works well. The location used is a bookshelf/cabinet as well as the front window of the house for more fun. The image can be easily projected onto a piece of glass 30 or 40 feet away since there are cheap projectors available. However, the projector would need to be located very close to the path of the intended viewer. In one scenario, the glass could be suspended at an angle towards the front of the house as the projector could be placed on an eave of the house. From a hidden spot on the roof, the image would be projected.

The brightness can be adjusted to the lowest setting and the contrast to the highest to keep from giving away the source of the image as shown below. This will make the background as dark as possible and be readjusted when using full screen to play the desired movie.

The LCD monitor is suspended above the viewing area for the cabinet configuration. The Halloween scene is created inside and the image is reflected to the viewer by placing the glass over it at an angle. The monitor on the floor is set pointing up for the windows configuration where a scary scene is created. The image will be reflected towards the window by placing a much larger piece of glass over it at an angle. The bottom edge of the glass should be as close to the bottom edge of the monitor as possible in either setup so the image floats in front of the scene. To control the height of the floating head, the angle of the glass is adjusted. It will also be adjusted as needed once it gets dark and turned ON.
