For old cars in pretty good condition, fixing the rust spots could be troublesome. This hack provides a better solution for this particular problem especially with the type of car shown in the photo below. The fix does not provide so much glamour but rather its functionality.

The sampled car contains 3 spots with rust on the front left fender. Taking the entire fender off would be too much of a hassle and would require disassembling a lot of the front of the car. The car was jacked up instead and the wheel was pulled. The plastic protection of the wheel was set off to the side after unscrewing in order to give a clear view and access beind the sheet metal on the car as shown below.

The next image shows the use of a 4.5” grinder with a 120 grit 3M sandblaster wheel in order to remove the paint around the rust. For taking off the thick layers of primer and paint, this equipment really works well until the clean metal surrounding the rust can be seen. All of the light rust that hadn’t pitted the metal can be removed by that wheel. A tarp can be used to cover up the engine since the paint dust is very fine and covers everything. More gring is performed by changing the sanding wheel with a metal grinding wheel.

To prepare for the painting, a good primer and some auto spray that matched the color of the car were used. A bit of car wash soap and water are mixed then the areas are sanded with a 400 grit wet sandpaper. Tape is used to masked off the areas and the surrounding areas were taped with newspapers as shown below. It is important to spray thin coats and keep it even when applying paint. To bring back the shine, the car should be waxed and washed after the paint had cured a good 48 hours.
